The light bulb in a living room lamp seemed to be burned out.
As I began to remove it from the socket,
it made loud popping noises and shot out blue sparks or flames.
It was hard to tell as it happened so fast.
I twisted it again and got the bulb out without further incident.
The base of the bulb was entirely black, was cracked, had a hole in it, and smelled terrible.
Parts of it were melted.
I was going to replace the bulb with a new one,
but the socket is also entirely black, has little black bits in it, and smells terrible.
The lamp is now unplugged.
I will attempt to clean it out tomorrow and see if it is salvageable.
Scary!
