Day 32 of 2026

My mother and my mother-in-law passed away
seven and four years ago, respectively.
It has been very hard to summon the courage
 to go through their purses.
I'm not talking about their checkbooks and wallets
or other time sensitive items.
Those were dealt with right away.
I'm talking about the pens and notebooks,
phone numbers and nail files,
mending kits and mirrors,
and one plastic rain bonnet.
I finally did go through the two purses
and kept just a few meaningful items.
I am discovering that as time passes
and I look through things again,
I always find some things I can let go of
that I previously thought I needed to keep.
Progress is slow, but progress is progress.

Day 317 of 2025

I found a container of photos today
separate from most of our collection of photos.
I don't think I've shared this one before,
but if I have, please enjoy it again.
Back row: My grandmother and grandfather (Dad's parents),
my uncle (Dad's brother),
Mom holding me at just over a month old,
my great aunt (Dad's dad's sister)
Front row: The older of my two brothers,
the younger of my two brothers,
my sister (whose birthday this was)

Day 243 of 2025

I just rediscovered another of Mom's hand knits.
This one will be going to a new home soon.

Day 152 of 2025

I found this needlepoint piece in a container today
 during more garage clean out.
I believe it was made by Mom.
I was never sure how to handle it
because it was a nice neat parallelogram.
It occurred to me today that I could try to wet block it.
So that's what I have done.
I washed it completely in water with a bar of wool soap.
I stretched in the needed direction
and pinned it to a foam blocking square.
There are a few moth holes here and there
which I will attempt to mend once it's dry.

Day 338 of 2024

I'm sorting through more things today.
Here are some of my mom's things
including a pen that was engraved
for her parents' 50th wedding anniversary.

Day 179 of 2024

Today I'm going through some long unopened boxes.
This one is one of Mom's marked "top of desk."

Day 144 of 2022

This small planter contains some of the flowers from Mom's garden.
It is always a nice reminder of her when they bloom in the spring.
According to the PictureThis app, it is called Wild Geranium.

Day 88 of 2022

The flowers I got to celebrate Mom keep getting better each day
as they continue to open up.

Day 84 of 2022

As it seems a tradition now,
we are celebrating the anniversary of Mom's birth with cake.

Day 8 of 2022

More sorting through things is happening today.
I found this photo in a folder.
It is what Mom used to call the four generations picture.
The youngest here is my sister.
My mother is on the far left, her mother is on the far right
and her grandmother is in the middle.
I'm not sure of the exact year this was taken
as the date is cut off the back of the picture,
but Mom is no older than 25 here.

This our version of the four generations picture taken in 2017.
Left to right:

Day 280 of 2021

When you put glasses on GB#5
who shares her middle name with her Great Grandma (my mom)
who passed away three years ago,
she bears a remarkable resemblance to her.

Day 98 of 2021

I found this little device in a box with a slide in it.
It needed cleaning from the corroded batteries that were inside,
some realignment of the connections,
new batteries and a bit of finesse to get it working, but once I did,
I found Mom from 1975.

Day 84 of 2021

I baked a cake to celebrate Mom on her birthday.
She would have been 92.

Day 85 of 2020

Although Mom's been gone almost a year and a half,
I baked a cake so we could celebrate her on her birthday.
She would be 91.

Day 200 of 2019

I was looking through a box today and found a folder of loose pictures.
This is my maternal grandmother.
She and Mom look so much alike.
Mom and me in 2010.

Day 177 of 2019

Mom's stone was finally set last month as it is something that must wait
until the ground thaws from the winter weather.
Fireball and I drove up to visit.
We brought flowers.

Day 154 of 2019

Some of the plants I dug up when Mom moved last June are blooming
despite the fact that I never got them out of the temporary pot and into the ground.
As far as I can tell they are a variety of wild geranium.
I like that I have these to remind me of her as she was great with plants
and I am not always so great.
I will enjoy them as long as I can keep them alive.
I think the fact that they are blooming is a positive sign.

Day 84 of 2019

I'm thinking of Mom and celebrating her birthday.
She would have been 90 today.
Happy Birthday, Mom.
