Day 224 of 2026

We had very strong storms most of the afternoon. 

We lost power for 5 1/2 hours. 

I couldn't cook dinner.

We had a visitor in the yard this afternoon. 

He was camouflaged quite well.

He was definitely looking for some lunch. 

I have completed filling in the photos 

from my time away on days 204-210.

Day 176 of 2026

When I fill the bird feeders, as I did today, 

there is ultimately some spillage of seeds. 

I leave them on the deck so the four-legged critters can enjoy it. 

Today the little red squirrel was the first one to notice 

and benefit from my plan.

This chipmunk has been chirping on the deck for a while. 

He has moved to the edge 

and is ready to sprint for the bird feeder.

I filled the feeders today 

so I spent some time watching the increased activity. 

It may not be especially clear to see, 

but the adult woodpecker (stripes showing) 

is feeding a young one (belly showing.)

I haven't seen a nuthatch in a while, 

so this was fun to see.

While I was hanging out with GB#3 tonight, 

Lincoln decided my lap was the best place 

regardless of whether I wanted to knit or not.

The sky is full of birds a lot lately.

Katydid in need of rescue from children who were frightened of it. 

I moved it to a safer place.

 

Day 274 of 2025

I put terra cotta watering spikes in two of my planters yesterday. 

The idea is to put the hollow spike into the planter

 down to ground (dirt) level

 and then put a wine bottle full of water, upside down into the spike.

 This morning when I left the house

 I found one planter pushed off the porch

 and the bottle broken on the porch and the walk. 

I suspect an animal did the damage, most likely a raccoon.

I think it's been a while since I've posted

 some of my backyard critters. 

I just happened to look up from my paperwork 

and out the door 

to see this chubby little chipmunk resting on the deck.

Everyone enjoys it when the neighborhood cat comes around, 

including the cat.

This one is tiny. 

The next driveway seems a long way off. 

And is it just me, or does he need to grow into those ears?

The hawk is back.

We visited the butterfly exhibit at the zoo

 for the first time in a long time. 

I am amazed at the number of butterflies that tend to gravitate

 toward flowers that seem to act as camouflage.

It's another picture of a bunny. 

This is one of the little ones who are growing bigger every day. 

Those ears with the sun shining through them get me every time.

Our plans for the day began with breakfast out. 

When we tried to leave, 

we found the neighborhood cat guarding our house. 

It took some effort to get him to move so we could open the door.

As I planted flowers and Fireball worked in the garage today, 

this little one seemed a bit uneasy 

about all the foot traffic on his turf.

The weather couldn't decide between clouds and sunshine.
