No, it's not too early for irises to be blooming.
I looked back at the iris pictures on the blog from the last 12 years
and I have pictures of them anytime from May 7th to May 27th.
We had a rather warm and wet April here
so that may have contributed to this year
being on the earlier side of the range.
But too early?
I don't think so.

I just remember MA talking about how they always took iris to the graves on Memorial Day because that was what was blooming at the time.
It's probably global warming!
