I too had the same problem. So, when we pulled everything out to put tile on the laundry room floor (removing a piece of vinyl), added a fresh coat of paint, we put up two smaller bars that fold onto the wall, removing the hanging bar over the washer. Now I have to move the hanging items or there will not be any room to put in the next load of laundry. Benefit, the laundry room looks so much bigger and is neater.
